Traditional Woodblock Print - Hiroshige: Evening Glow at Asakusa
Woodblock Print - Evening Glow at Asakusa
This print has been worked onto traditional Japanese paper called washi. It has been printed and coloured by hand. It comes encased in a heavy paper mat.
This particular print is a limited edition reproduction of a work by Hiroshige (1753-1806). It is part of a landscape series entitled 'Famous Views of the Eastern Capital'.
In his early work Hiroshige largely confined himself to common themes such as bijin-ga (women) and yakusha-e (actors). Then, in 1831 he produced the landscape series ‘Famous Views of the Eastern Capital’ (Tōto Meisho), which was critically acclaimed for its composition and colour.
Hiroshige created many print sets including 'The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō' (1833–1834) and 'The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō' (1834–1842), which were drawn from his travels.
Hiroshige went on to produce an estimated total of 5000 designs in the landscape genre.
A group of framed woodblock prints looks particularly stunning hanging on the wall of almost any interior – modern, classical or contemporary. The choice of framing can influence the final look of the image or group of images.
Remember, woodblock prints make great gifts – especially for weddings!
